An electronic cigarette or “e-cig” is an alternative to smoked tobacco products like traditional cigarettes. It runs on a battery that gives inhaled doses of nicotine by delivering a vaporized synthetic nicotine solution. This vapour also provides a flavour and simulation that is similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke. There is no real smoke that is produced from the electronic cigarettes, but the actual result of “smoking” it gives a similar sensation to traditional smoking.

When someone inhales through the end, air flow is detected by a sensor that activates a heating component that vaporizes the synthetic nicotine solution. The nicotine is stored in the cartridge and it is from this nicotine that vapour is inhaled by the operator. The LED light at the end of the cig lights up which simulates the “burning” of the cigarette.

What does each component do?

The cartridge is a tiny disposable plastic cup that is fixed to the end of the tube. This cartridge is what holds they synthetic nicotine solution. The cartridges are equivalent to approximately one pack of cigarettes, depending on which model of electronic cigarette you purchase. Once the solution runs out, you will no longer be exhaling the water vapour and no nicotine will be in inhaled. You simply change the cartridge for a new one and you are ready to enjoy another round of nicotine.

The lithium-ion battery is rechargeable and can last for quite a while. The battery is used to activate the heating element which vaporizes the nicotine solution. The battery also activates the LED light at the end of the device in order to show when it is in use. The batteries are generally the largest part of the cigarette and can be charged like any other battery. You can plug them into a wall, a USB port, or a car charger.

There are also a lot of flavours and different strengths the nicotine cartridges come in so now you can enjoy a “Smoke” without actually smoking!

	Warning: Keep cartridges and fluid out of reach from children. Nicotine in its pure form is a poison, and can cause harm. All nicotine cartridges and fluid must be kept in a safe place and away from children, as the amount of nicotine in a cartridge, if ingested by a small child could cause serious harm and medical assistance should be sought.
	It is worth noting that, despite the description, electronic cigarettes cannot be marketed as a Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) in the UK. This requires official testing to prove that this is indeed the case before a license can be granted for it to promoted in this way. This testing has not taken place on electronic cigarettes and it is therefore an offence ‘to sell, supply or advertise a Nicotine Replacement Product which does not have a product licence’.
